Asenovgrad is situated on the two banks of the Assenitsa River and north slopes of Rhodopes Mountain, 180 m above sea level, some 10 km from Plovdiv Airport. The first historical traces are of the Thracian times. Because of so many churches and monasteries the town is nick named Little Jerusalem. The town is one of the oldest towns in Bulgaria, in vicinity were founded more 100 Thracian hills, old name is Stanimaka- origin of stronghold built by Bulgarian king Ivan Asen in 1230, given the name later Asenovata krepost and town name. Mostly importance of the town is wine production. The population is 59000 people. There many unique monuments well preserved nowadays, improve the importance for Bulgarian history. Most important is Asenovata krepost (stronghold). Some 11 km away is situated second biggest monastery in Bulgaria- Bachkovo Monastery, while 8 km away is Arapovo monastery. 9 km away is located reserve The Red wall includes more 600 plants, listed in UNESCO heritage book. Some 45 km away is situated the unique Krastova Gora- regards the legend staying overnight will teat incurable diseased peoples. Near the town are locate the Plovdiv Airport. There are many hotels, hostels, villas and houses for rent.
The landmarks also include Historical, Ethnographical, Renaissance, Archaeological and Pan theological museums. The infrastructure is well developed; there are regular buses and trains to all surrounding towns and resorts.
