Location Description
Kavarna is a small port town which has a broad outlet on the Black Sea to the Eastern and Southern sides. The coast is varied and there are cliffs combined with beaches and abrasive formations such as caves, fissures, etc. Many rock concerts take place during the summers. The landmark Cape Kaliakra is located a few kilometers to the east. Three 18-hole golf courses with villa communities and marinas are being developed nearby, two of the courses are designed by Gary Player and one by Ian Woosnam.
Kavarna is located in northeastern Bulgaria at 64km distance from Varna and 49km from Dobrich.
The brush and the palette of archeological finds are painting the historical panel of the town since the third millennium b.c. In V-th c. b.c. Greek settlers from Mesembria formed a colony called Byzone on the lands of an old Thracian settlement. Byzone starts to trade with Black sea coastal and eastern Mediterranean towns but it’s development is curtly stopped with a disastrous earthquake which took part of the ancient town and part of Chirakman plateau underwater. During the Roman period the town was rebuilt under the same name and quickly flourished, the settlement is reborn and the harbor becomes alive and crowded again. The town exists this appearance till VII c., when it’s destroyed by the Slavs and the Bulgarians which later established the Karvuna settlement. During XIV c. Karvuna and Kaliakra are the main towns of the Karvuna principality. Its current name Kavarna brings from XV century.
The town has been economical and cultural center during the Antiquity and the Middle Ages. Evidences for that are the ruins of the fortified walls, early christianery basilica, churches, buildings, coins, adornments, Thracian treasure form golden appliqués and others.
This millennium history of the town is illustrated through an exposition in the City’s archeological museum which is composite from archeological finds from ancient times till the Renaissance. The museum also possess ethnographical part where on exhibition are garments, adornments, folk-st cloth and others.
Despite of the small territories of the town and the small population of 12 000 people, Kavarna is object of great interest during the last few years, big merit for that has the large advertising campaign that the municipality drives. The investments in the region are progressing and the unemployment drops rapidly. The investors are drawn to it by the good modern infrastructure and the well developed service sphere. The town possesses resorts, spacious beach and fishing base.
Hare are also conducted cultural events such as: Bulgarian youth folklore festival “With Bulgaria in the heart”, National festival for dilettante theatre with international participation, Rock festival which is gathering great auditory because of the big rock bands that are performing; also the week of the sea and the attractive Fish and Mussel’s festival. By mentioning the Mussel’s fest we can’t pass the fact that the first Mussel farms in Bulgaria are also made in Kavarna’s region (village of Dulboka and Chirakman plateau). Cave tourism, science tourism at natural-archeological reserves “Yailata”and “Kaliakra”; eco tourism in all its forms from family vacation in cozy traditional village house in the village of Bulgarevo till specialized tourism- watching and photographing birds and plants, dolphins and different kind of fishes on the sea coast waters, familiarize oneself with the rich cultural and historical inherence; and also golf tourism. All those entertainments contribute for economical development of the municipality and familiarizing the region of Kavarna as a new and attractive destination.
