Description

The town of Kazanlak is situated at 194 kilometers east from Sofia at the well known Rose Valley.
This convenient location is attracting people since ancient times. The first traces of settlements in the area dates back to the Neolithic era. Here
during 5th- 6th century BC the Thracian ruler Seuthes III had built the capitol of the Odrysian kingdom Seuthopolis.

Unlike most of the cities in Bulgaria, Kazanlak’s historical treasure lies within the Thracian architecture not on Roman, which makes it extremely important architectural center. Looking the fact that the knowledge for the Thracian we had is so poor that is almost nothing, in these area have been discovered and explored more than 20 Thracian  mounds as well as the best preserved Thracian city- Seuthopolis. If you ever wondered where the geographical center of Bulgaria is, it is the town of Kazanlak, but the town is not only the center of the country but also the center of so called “The Valley of the Thracian Kings”. In the area lies the most important discovery for the Thracian culture and history: The mounds: Kazanlak’s tomb and “The Big Kosmatka” (the tomb of the Thracian ruler Seuthes III). “The Big Kosmatka” tomb is more famous with the artifacts found in it and especially the bronze head of Seuthes III and the Kazanlak’s tomb is famous with some of the best preserved antique frescoes from the Early Hellenistic period. Those frescoes are archeological fortune, which gives information for the rituals, clothes and moments of the Thracian ruler’s earth life, military and after life. It was impossible for this huge “treasure” to be left unspotted by UNESCO and it became its member in 1979. The tomb itself is closed for tourist visit, because of the danger for the frescoes, but exact copy of it has been built for tourists purposes. Other find of huge archeological importance is the ancient city of Seuthopolis. It has been found in 1948 during the building of reservoir “Koprinka”. Unfortunately the build-up activity continued after it was explored and nowadays it lies on the bottom of the artificial lake. Because of its importance it was made a project for its uncovering and restoration and if it’s executed there’s a big chance for the city to also become a member of UNESCO and a top destination.

Kazanlak is also famous with the rose oil production.
The fragrance of the Rose Valley scents the town and charms its visitors. The cultivation of this fastidious and yet divine flower is extremely expensive, indication for which is the price- 5000 euro for kilogram. The first factory for the “liquid gold” is established at 1820, which makes the producing tradition of the area almost two centuries old. The flower makes the town world wide famous and the citizens had made the unique Museum of Rosa damascena. The aromatic vocation and the richness of Thracian culture in the area had led to tourist traditions in Kazanlak. Besides that, it has perfect conditions for future progress, because of its location close to natural park “Central Balkan” and the hot healing mineral springs around the village of Ovoshtnik.

When you visit the town you’ll be charmed by its beauty and you can also visit the Literature-art Museum “Chudomir”, the Art Gallery- Kazanlak, Home of culture “Arsenal”, Military Club Kazanlak, Historical Museum “Iskra” etc. And in the area around the town you can also enjoy: National Park- Museum “Shipka- Buzludzha”, peak “Shipka”, peak “Buzludzha”, The Valley of the Thracian kings etc.

The annual events in the town are: Holiday of the rose, International folklore dance festival, Beer fest “The Valley of the roses” etc. It seems like Kazanlak is calling its visitors to stay in the town and to enjoy its multiple entertainments.
