Location Description

Nessebar (Несебър) is an ancient city and a major seaside resort on the Black Sea coast of Bulgaria, located in Nessebar municipality, Burgas Province. Often referred to as the "Pearl of the Black Sea" and "Bulgaria's Dubrovnik", Nesebar is a rich city-museum defined by more than three millennia of ever-changing history. It is the successor of the ancient Thracian settlement called Mesambria founded in the Second century AD. Its name means town of Melsa. Since 510 AD it was turned into Greek colony town by Dorian settlers. They called it Mesambria and turned it a rival to the town of Apollo for the Black Sea trade.

The new part of Nessebar is the centre of the administrative life. It has a modern st of architecture. The hotels, holiday houses and private rooms meet the last tendencies in tourism. The places of accommodation, both in the old and the new part of the town, have been given are a two and a three-star rating. The numerous restaurants scattered along the narrow winding streets or near the sea shore are wonderful places for pleasant experiences. They offer traditional dishes, sea delicacies, game specialties, exotic cocktails and vintage wines as well as a high standard of service.
And the old part of Nessebar which is located on a small peninsula in the Black Sea, is linked with the land only by a long and narrow isthmus.

Today the old part of Nessebar is an attractive place for romantic walks along the narrow cobbled streets, among the small shops selling handmade souveniers, knitting and crochets, jewellery. The town with its splendid antique atmosphere gives an opportunity for recreation and leisure. There are many comfortable guest houses and private rooms. Also there are many sights , most attractive from which are the famous Nessbar’s churches. The town is proud with the church of St. Sofia, known as the Old Metropolitan church, and the church of Virgin Eleusa, situated on the northern shore, are three-isled basilicas dating back to the early Byzantine period from 5th to 6th cc.; The church of St. John the Baptist from 11th c is distinguished for its cylinder dome and St. Stephan’s church is remarkable for its frescoes from 16th c.; The church of St. John Aliturgetos has remained an invaluable monument of Bulgarian culture. It was not consecrated (the name “aliturgetos” is the Greek for “not consecrated”) and it was not used for worship. Also there are several examples of the “ornamental” st of architecture which flourished in 13th and 14th cc. Its main characteristic is the multi-coloured design of the facades which can be seen in the church of St. Todor, St. Paraskeva, the Archangels Michael and Gabriel. The church of Christ the Pantocrator is a typical example of that st of architecture carried out to perfection. It is rich in architectural ornaments and horizontal bands of dressed stone and brick. Situated in the centre of the town, the church is a real treasure for Bulgaria.
Besides the churches t
he old quarters of Nessebar show remarkable taste and mastership in the construction of houses, stone walls, and streets. The Turkish bath and the windmill at the beginning of the causeway are of particular interest. Outside the town, one can visit the village of Aheloy, in the vicinity of which the Bulgarian Tsar Simeon I destroyed the armies of the Byzantine emperor Lion Foka. Aheloy is situated on the motorway to Bourgas near the mouth of the Aheloy River. The field of the landmark battle, which made the Bulgarian state the incontestable dominion of the Balkan peninsula, is called nowadays Kokalos (having its root in the Bulgarian word for 'Bones') after the scattered corpses of killed soldiers.

The area of the Municipality of Nesebar is 21 883 decares or 5.4% of the territory of the District of Bourgas. 167 229 decares of them are arable lands, 20 418 decares are forests. The beaches are among the largest on the Bulgarian Black Sea coastline, with an area of 1517 decares and a capacity of 139 450 places for the tourists. These natural resources are the most important factors which determine and form the main fields of the municipal economic - tourism, recreation, and sports.
