Pravets is situated approximately 60km from the capital Sofia. It lies in the Etropole part of the Balkan mountain, and is naturally bounded by the relatively low Bilo mountain to the South and the defile of the Vitomeritsa river to the north. Bulgaria''s former dictator Todor Zhivkov was a native of the town. The first microprocessor factory in Bulgaria was situated in Pravets.
Pravets is also a good base for discovering some of the most beautiful places in Bulgaria: Sofia, the elegant capital city, the Rila monastery, set in the depths of a wooded valley, or Koprivshtitsa, a jewel of Bulgarian cultural renaissance architecture.
Today, the town is famous for its City University campus and two prestigious high schools. The first one is a language high school by the name of Aleko Konstantinov. It prepares many students who continue their undergraduate education in Bulgaria, USA, Germany, and France. The second high school is one of two technical schools, which prepares students for the Technical University in Sofia, Bulgaria. It allows for direct admission to the University to its top students.
Appealing opportunities for water sports, fishing and tourism are offered by the following: Dam lake Pravets – traditional place for the above mentioned activities and having good water facilities; the completely renovated swimming pool of Olympic size, located immediately next to Pravets Dam Lake; the dam lakes Skarnava and Ossikovitsa (in the village of Ossikovitsa), which are quite attractive to the fans of fishing.
Pravets is still one of the few cities of Bulgaria which are presented with high quality satellite images on the popular Google Earth program.
