Description

The town of Sandanski is located in South Bulgaria, at 166km distance from Sofia and nearly as much from the Greek city of Thessaloniki. In ancient times the Thracian tribe of Medi had settled on these lands. It is believed that the famous Spartacus had been born and raised here, before it was captured. During the Roman period, the settlement was extended and improved, when its highest point it reached in 4- 6th century. Many public buildings and Early Christian basilicas, including Early Christian bishop’s complex were found from that period. Later the Slavs called the village- Sveti Vrach (Saint Healer), in honor of the famous healers- the brothers Kozma and Damyan. During the Ottoman domination, the city was a market center with small and mixed population. In 1912 the village has a population of just over 500 people and for example, in that period the town of Melnik has a population of over 12 000 people.  In the years between 1913 and 1925, many refugees from Greek Thrace settled here and that increased the population. Nowadays there are about 30 000 people in Sandanski, and the number of people in the aforementioned Melnik is about 280. The village of Sveti Vrach was declared town, by a decision of the National Assembly on 18 June 1929.
