Smolyan (Смолян) is a town and ski resort in the very south of Bulgaria, the administrative center of Smolyan Province. It is situated in the valley of the Cherna ("Black") and the Byala ("White") Rivers in the central Rhodopes at the foot of the mountains’ highest part south of the popular ski resorts Pamporovo and Chepelare.
After the long and winding road from Plovdiv full of curves, there it is, a charming city waiting for you, ready to make you quickly forget the exhaustion.
That cheerful town will enchant you with its unique combination of old and modern architecture, with the balmy air of blooming lime-trees at the start of summer, with the magic of colours in autumn and the white silence of the winter.
The Ezerovo suburb on the other hand, offers the cosy home atmosphere of rustic life without taking you too far from the city centre of Smolyan, which is only 5 km away. The comfortable family hotels are surrounded by the lovely scenery of the Smolyan Lakes and are just 2-3 km from the lift leading to Snezhanka Peak.
The nature of the Rhodope Mountains is the perfect place for winter and summer tourism, rural tourism, hunting and ecotourism. Most of the populated areas are tourist centers. In the pretty villages of Momchilovtsi, Smilian, Gela, etc. one can taste traditional cuisine of the Rhodopes, hear and see the famous dances and songs of the Rhodopes. Some of the natural landmarks are the biosphere reserves of Kazanite, Soskovche, Momchil Dol and Amzovo, the rocky vaults of the Wonderful Bridges (Chudnite mostove), the Buinov and Trigrad gorges, the Devil’s Throat (Diavolskoto Garlo), Uhlovitsa and Yagodina caves.
