St. St. “Constantine and Helena” – This is the name of the oldest Bulgarian sea coast resort. Officially the status of resort St. St. “Constantine and Helen” wears from 1908 when was pronounced balneotherapeutical center, but it is active as such long time before that.
It is believed that all high aristoctacy of Byzantium had often visit the mineral springs in the area. But especially attracted to it was the mother of imperator Constantine – impress Helen.
Maybe for the most of the people it’s unknown fact that the resort was named after the St. St. “Constantine and Helen” monastery. The dating of the formal huge monach temple it’s around XVI century. Today only the church is preserved. During the middle of XXth c. there was a miracle icon of St. St. Constantine and Helen and a healing spring, which is now behind the holy throne in the temple. The monastery is the only one, which is preserving the holy relics of St. Valentine from the town of Terni, Italy. There is also a holy water spring, which is naturally rising beneath the Holy Throne in the alter of the temple. They also keep chronicles with miracles of healed sick people (more then 40 cases for the period of two years).
In 1905 with the help of the Bulgarian queen Eleonora and dr. Parashkev Stoyanov, starts the building of sanatorium for children with articulation and bone tuberculosis. The stay there was really productive with high results, about 60-65% of then got healed completely and the rest left the facility with major improvements. Many people desired to come on a visit, so they were accommodated in the buildings of the monastery. Despite the discomfort of sleeping on a straw mattress, the of bringing one’s own sheets and cooking vessels and dishes, the influx was frequent.
After the foundation of the Bulgarian exarchate (28th February 1870), the monastery and its lands were assumptive from Varna’s town hall. Later with a decision of the law-court from 24.11.1897 the lands were sold to Varna’s town hall. At the same year the Town Hall starts the subsequently building of the area around the monastery, giving the basis of the resort.
With a decision of the Council of Ministers from 01.12.1955 has been given the responsible task of making two resorts around Varna: Amity and Golden Sands. And so at 1957 the building of the resort has started at first called “Balkantourist”, and later the well known name around Varna’s citizens – Drujba. The name of the resort is changed at 1992.
Besides its healing springs the resort also has internet clubs, restaurants, bars, shops for souvenirs and clothes, rally track, water sports, jets, “bananas”, surf and others. In the resort are situated active police station, post office, chemist’s, gas station and health center, and close to him there’s regular public transport from the Railway station and the center of Varna.
Pools with healing water are working all year long. But the best thing about the resort is the calmness and the silence, the mountain aroma of forests and the fresh sea breeze.
