Panorama  **** - Varna, Bulgaria

Varna is the biggest city on the east Black Sea coast and the biggest in northern Bulgaria. The city is big culture center with strongly developed marine tourism which is why during the summer season Varna is the most spirited city in Bulgaria and that on the other hand brings him the alias “Marine capitol of Bulgaria”.

In ancient times on the territories of the city there was a Thracian tribe known as Korbizi, later in VI c. B.C. Greek colonists from Miletus found a polis under the name of Odessos. In the beginning the polis forms itself as a fishery and agriculture settlement and during V c. b.c. it starts its progressive development as a trade center.

In the pace of time Varna is part of different empires as Macedonian, Roman, and Byzantium and later is part of the territories of Bulgaria and Ottoman Empire. During the Middle Ages the country in which territories Varna lies is changing several times and this continues till 1878 when after the liberation of Bulgaria Varna permanently lies in the territories of Bulgaria and it’s the third city by size in the country. The city continues to increase even nowadays with the population of 360 000 people is right behind Sofia and Plovdiv.

The location of Varna combined with the lively during the summer are making wonderful base for conducting for culture events and festivals such as theatrical and music festival “Varna’s summer”, International ballet competition, International jazz fest, cinema festival “Love is madness”, International folklore festival, Week of the sea and others.

Besides the multiple festivals Varna also possess rich archeological inheritance part of which is the oldest gold treasure found in the world, preserving in the city’s archeological museum. One of the symbols of the city is the gorgeous cathedral “St. Assumption of the Blessed Virgin”, the clock tower where the fire station used to located is situated across the cathedral in the centrum of Varna. Opera, Dramatic theatre and the Club of figures and culture, Puppet theatre are also part of the ensemble of Varna’s culture. Also here’s the Dolphinarium where are conducted daily attractive spectacles. In the confectionery which has panoramic windows you may look the underwater plays of the dolphins. The museum of Black Sea, The Aquarium with an interesting exposition of our marine flora and fauna, Zoo with exotic animals, Naval Museum of Varna and the Planetarium along with the Dolphinarium are situated in the Marine Garden.

Varna’s Sea Garden is also a symbol of the city. Its beautiful and quiet alleys are settled on the whole sea coast city alley. The gorgeous garden areas, quiet alleys which are giving the feeling of calmness, the beautiful multiple and natural vegetation and the multiple cultural monuments on its territories are capturing the heart of everyone and you’ll be sure to remember it. That’s why the Marine Garden of Varna is one of the most preferred places for walking among the Varna’s citizens and visitors. The side areas of the city are also loved for walks and picnics. Those areas are: quarter of Vinica with it’s forests around, Asparuhovo with it’s bridge, park and the area of Djanavara where is a early Christianity basilica, the quarter Galata with its high rocky headland above the sea with lots of villas and private hotels. At 20 km of Varna there’s “Stone Forest”- one of the biggest geographical sights in Bulgaria.

Close to the city are few splendid summer resorts: “Golden Sands” at 18km distance from Varna, “Sunny Day” at 15km distance from Varna and St. St. “Constantine and Helen” at 9km distance from Varna.

During 2007 and 2008, Varna won a reword for “Best city to live in Bulgaria”.
