Velingrad is situated in the region of Pazardjik district – in the North - west part of Rhodopa Mountain. At 1948 the administration of three villages – Ladzhene, Chepino and Kamenitsa took a decision for unification. That is the birthday of the famous balneological resort Velingrad. After the unification Velingrad become a leading cultural, economic and administrative center in the region of North-West Rhodopi. The town itself was named after Vela Peeva, a female partisan leader born there and killed during the partisan uprisings of the mid-40es of last century.
Situated in the picturesque Chepino valley, roundabout venerable oaks and pine-trees, Velingrad is the most popular place for rest and medication in Bulgaria. It is also famous with its perfect climatic conditions – an open winter and cool summer. Thanks to the unique natural resources, Velingrad is a place for development of tourist business. Here you can find a lot of luxury hotels, SPA centers and private guest houses, where you can spend your vacation.
At present, the town lives mostly on tourism and wood processing. The 80 mineral springs, mild climate and beautiful nature create ideal conditions for recreational tourism. The temperature of the springs varies from 220 to 900. While all three quarters of Velingrad have mineral waters, the Chepino one accounts for about half of the town’s water resources. The mineral water of Velingrad combines the curative qualities of other mineral water-rich areas in Bulgaria, such as Hissar, Banya and Narechenski Bani. The springs are used for treatment of illnesses of the motive system, the stomach and the intenstinal tract, liver, skin, etc.
Together with the numerous mineral waters Velingrad takes pride in another natural phenomenon as well – the Kleptuza. This is the biggest Karst spring in Bulgaria with debit of 580-1200 litres per second of ice-cold water per second. A beautiful lake with restaurants and a small park lies close to the spring. On the other hand, the most visited man-made sight is the old church of Kamenitsa, St Trinity, built in 1816 and recently renovated and re-painted.
The surrounding nature of Velingrad is the right place for picknicks and excursions.
In the resort successfully are treated a lot of pulmonary cases: pulmonary emphysema, chronic bronchitis, post bronchial pneumonia, etc. The treatment of non-specific diseases of the respiratory tract is particularly successful. Considerable experience has been accumulated in the efficient treatment of diseases of the locomotive system, nervous diseases and gynecological disorders.
Those who are interested in fishing can visit the numerous lakes and reservoirs around Velingrad – Dospat, Belmeken, Batak and so on.
